Our environment - land, sea, air, rivers - is constantly under threat. From flooding, to getting rid of nuclear waste, to building houses on the green belt - the land which in theory is meant to stop urban sprawl - the challenge is endless.

This section deals with some of the biggest challenges of all, including:

• climate change and what the UK Government and other institutions are doing to counter it
• what the UK is doing to achieve sustainable development - development which meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs
• how the UK is using new forms of renewable energy to reduce carbon emissions
• what UK industry and business is doing to protect the environment
• the international organisations that the UK works with to achieve climate security, such as the European Union (EU), the United Nations (UN) and G8.
