UK's Aviation Security Measures

On 21 September, The Department for Transport (DfT) announced changes to the UK's aviation security measures, notably increases to the size of cabin baggage that can be taken onboard an aircraft. The changes will take effect from Friday 22 September 2006. Please use the following DfT link for specific information:

The UK police, acting with the security service, MI5, have carried out a major counter-terrorism operation to disrupt an alleged plot to bring down a number of aircraft through mid-flight explosions.

While services are begining to improve, the disruption caused by this operation and the necessary security precautions continue to result in delays and cancellations. This is causing over-crowding and passenger processing backlogs at airports across the world. New security arrangements came into effect early on 14 August.

Anyone intending to fly to the UK in the immediate future must check with their airline or tour operator for the latest travel information.

The FCO is in contact with tour operators and travel agents and is monitoring the situation closely.
