Lost or Stolen Passport
The loss or theft of your passport should be reported immediately to the Passport production Centre, irrespective of whether you intend to apply for a new passport. You should use form LS01 (PDF, 56 Kb)
If your passport is lost or stolen in Canada and you wish to apply for a new passport you have a number of options.
If you are a visitor to Canada or you have urgent travel commitments you should contact your nearest Consulate for advice .
If you do not need to travel immediately we prefer you to apply for a full British passport through the Passport Production Centre.
You may do so by mail by following these steps:
- Complete all relevant sections of the passport form and remember to sign inside the box;
- Include 2 photographs in the correct format ; the back of one photograph must be countersigned;
- If you are a visitor to Canada and you are unable to find a counter-signatory who has known you for the requisite period please provide a covering letter with your application to explain your situation;
- Include the correct fee. Fees are subject to change monthly as the exchange rate shifts;
- Include an additional piece of federal or provincial government issued photo identification (recently expired driving licence; SIN card; recently expired Canadian passport); (please note that birth certificates are not an acceptable form of ID);
- Include a complete form LS01 (PDF, 56 Kb) and a copy of the police report;
- Send everything to the Passport Production Centre.
We may need to make enquiries into the circumstances of a loss or theft in order to ensure that your identity has not been compromised. If we have concerns about the circumstances of the loss or theft we may ask you to submit additional information or attend a passport interview. This may delay the issue of a replacement passport.
We cancel all passports that are declared lost or stolen in order to protect your identity. If your passport is recovered after you have reported it lost or stolen you should return it to the High Commission or to the Passport Office in the UK as soon as possible.
Once you report your passport as lost or stolen the passport is electronically cancelled and you are not able to use it as legal proof of identity, nationality or for any other legal purpose. You must not use it to travel, as this may cause the passport to be impounded by the Immigration Service at UK ports or airports, and if attempting to travel overseas, you could face deportation or arrest. You must also not use it as a means of identification, as this may be detected as a potentially fraudulent act
