Passports

Important information about applying for a British Passport.

If you are applying for a British Passport  you must do this through the UK Passport Service for the Americas and Caribbean. We are unable to accept passport applications at the British High Commission or our Consulates or Honorary Consulates in Canada. Passport applications that are sent to the British High Commission or one of the Consulates will be returned to sender. Any additional costs that are incurred will be the applicant's responsibility.

Passport changes

As part of a global rationalisation of our overseas passport production, from November 2008 all British passports in North America will be issued at the UK's Passport Service for the Americas and Caribbean in Washington DC.

Similar changes are being made in Europe and Australia, and Asia.  General information about the decision to centralise all passport production is available in our FAQs

Important information for British Nationals visiting the USA

British passport holders who want to enter the USA by air or sea under the US Visa Waiver Program after 12 January 2009 must register with the US Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ESTA) prior to travelling.  For information about ESTA, see FCO Travel Advice for the USA.
