Climate Change
Internationally, the UK is actively promoting a low carbon, high growth economy through an ambitious new global climate change agreement. In this spirit, the overall common objective of the UK is to encourage immediate action and promote climate security in all areas of the world.
Domestically, Britain is striving to "walk the talk" by committing itself to an 80% reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions over 1990 levels by 2050 through its landmark new Climate Change Law and other pro-active measures to green its economy.
In Canada, we work with policy makers, business leaders and others to encourage acceptance that early and ambitious action on climate change will be good for jobs, growth, competitiveness and economic security. We are also working with Canada to reach a new global climate change agreement at COP15 in December 2009 in Copenhagen. The High Commission in Ottawa and our Consulates across the country have undertaken various measures to decrease our carbon footprint, from retrofitting buildings to encouraging staff to use video conferences rather than travel.
“We cannot afford to put climate change into the international pending tray because of the present economic difficulties. On the contrary, we must use the imperative to act for our future prosperity through the transition to a low carbon economy and reduced oil dependency as a route to creating jobs and economic opportunity for our peoples today.”
- UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown
