UK military training in Canada
UK and Canada participate in numerous training programs, from individual military students attending colleges in our respective countries, to specialist unit level training for particular tasks, all the way up to Brigade level training at BATUS or NATO training at NFTC.
NFTC -The NATO Flying Training College is based at Cold Lake (AB) where pilots of all NATO member countries are eligible to train. The majority of Pilot Instructors are supplied by the Royal Air Force with instructors from Canada, Italy, Hungary, Denmark, Germany, Finland, Sweden and Singapore adding their expertise and experience also.
The course is split into two phases; Phase 1 which is held at Moose Jaw (SK) and the longer Phase 2 at Cold Lake.
BATUS - British Army Training Unit Suffield. Just north of Medicine Hat on the prairies of Alberta lies one of the most ideally suited training areas for the British Army. Ranging from 200 personnel in the non-training periods to over 8000 personnel with equipment during the Medicine Man exercises, BATUS aims to provide the opportunities for both Battle Group and Brigade sized units to reach their Operational Readiness states.
Not only do the British Army have the use of such a fine training area but our presence there has a huge impact on the local economy. Many Canadians have moved to the area because the large concentration of troops provide opportunities for trade and as such a good rapport has been established with the local community.
