Scholarships

We welcome and value the contributions that international students make to the United Kingdom. Most graduate degrees in the UK are shorter than in Canada, providing a cost-effective option for Canadian students. There are numerous sources of funding and scholarships available to Canadian graduate students.

Each year, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office offers future leaders and decision-makers opportunities for post-graduate study in the UK under the British Chevening scholarship program. They are highly competitive and limited in number. Successful candidates are graduates with an outstanding record of achievement and clear leadership potential. They will be able to demonstrate that they have more to offer than their peers and contemporaries, and that they have the potential and ambition to make a substantial, positive difference in their chosen field. Although candidates come from a range of academic disciplines, they are likely to have already worked for 2-3 years in their chosen profession as a Civil Servant, Journalist, Politician/Staffer or Jurist.

In Canada, the scheme is managed by the British Council and the British High Commission in Ottawa. The British Council Canada website provides details of the scheme and application procedures. Scholarships last up to one year and are typically granted for Masters degree courses. It is highly unusual for the committee to approve an award for PhD studies. The awards will cover full university tuition fees as well as a generous contribution towards living costs. The approximate value of scholarships will be £20,000 each. Aimed at the leaders of tomorrow, the Chevening Scholarship is designed to foster international links between Canada and the UK.
