Single Atom Quantum Dots are Smallest Ever
Researchers Canada's National Institute for Nanotechnology and the University of Alberta have created the smallest quantum dots ever – each just a single atom measuring less than a nanometre in diameter. This development makes possible a new level of control over individual electrons, suddenly bringing quantum dot-based devices within reach.

UK to get Biofuel Research Centre
The Sustainable Bioenergy Centre, which will have hubs at six universities - was established by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), and will focus on economically competitive and environmentally sound alternatives to fossil fuels.

Professor Stephen Hawking at Perimeter Institute
A major coup for Waterloo Ontario’s Perimeter Institute, Professor Stephen Hawking has accepted the Distinguished Research Chair at the 7 year-old physics hub. Professor Hawking will likely make his first visit in summer 2009

Canadian Centre for Electron Microscopy Opens
McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, will host the new centre that will provide “unique electron microscopy capabilities and expertise to researchers working on a broad range of materials research.”
